Who says engagement photos have to mean dressing up and standing in a pretty location for an hour? Lauren and Patrick's golf course engagement session at Red Rock Country Club

was the perfect example of why I love doing things a little differently. Instead of planning a traditional engagement session, we turned something they already enjoy doing together into a fun date on the golf course. Think golf carts, a little friendly competition, lots of laughs, and some seriously good sunrise lighting. The result? Photos that feel like actual moments from their relationship rather than a bunch of poses they found on Pinterest.

Planning a Golf Course Engagement Session That Actually Feels Like You

Lauren and Patrick booked me for their wedding next June, and their eight-hour wedding photography package included an engagement session. After booking, we actually got to meet up for coffee, which was so fun because a lot of my clients are from out of state or international! We chatted about their wedding plans, got to know each other a little better, and started brainstorming ideas for their engagement photos. After hearing more about their personalities and what they wanted from their photos, I threw out the idea of doing something more cinematic. Almost like documenting a little day in their life rather than recreating the same engagement photos we've all seen a million times. They were immediately on board!

We started talking about activities they love doing together, and that's how we landed on golf. And let me tell you, I was excited. Luckily, I have a friend who works at Red Rock Country Club (shoutout to Sabrina for making the connection!), so we were able to get in touch with their team and arrange access to the Mountain Course for our session. There was a fee involved, but having access to the course gave us the opportunity to create something really special. This is exactly why I love getting to know my couples before their sessions. Sometimes the best location isn't necessarily the prettiest spot you can find on Google. It's somewhere that actually means something to you!

Sunrise at Red Rock Country Club: Golf Carts, Good Light & Candid Moments

We planned their session around sunrise, and I'm just going to say it: sunrise lighting is superior! I said what I said. The soft morning light across the golf course, the mountains in the background, and having room to move around made this session so much fun to photograph. Lauren and Patrick spent their time playing golf, cruising around in the cart, walking hand in hand, and just being themselves. There was no pressure to constantly look at the camera or figure out what to do with their hands. We had an actual activity to build the session around, which made everything feel so much more natural. And yes, we still got those sweet, romantic portraits in between all the fun.

This is what I want more couples to take away from Lauren and Patrick's session. Your engagement photos don't have to involve buying a fancy outfit and showing up somewhere pretty just because that's what everyone else is doing. If you love golfing, let's go golfing. If you're more into cocktails downtown, let's make a date night out of it. Whatever your thing is, we can build a session around it. I love creating photos that feel cinematic and a little editorial while still capturing those genuine, unplanned moments that make your relationship yours. And honestly? Those are usually the photos you'll love looking back on the most.
